WADSIH continued one of our most popular events series recently with the Curtin AI in Research (CAIR) Forum, where we showed what AI is doing – and can do – to help academics get better results out of research not just faster but for deeper insight, more innovative outcomes and at exponential scales.

Advisory Board member Professor Melinda Fitzgerald talked about Curtin University’s commitment to using AI to further academic research ethically and responsibly during her opening address, and attendees learned how to use it to perform tasks from analysing video interviews, generating experimental data, building survey tools and much more.

Like we aim for in all our events, the CAIR Forum was full of vibrant debate, informed insight and practical, hands-on experience thanks to the demonstrations and systems used.

Director Alex Jenkins talked about project workflows and artefacts using ClaudeAI, and he was joined by a roll call of very smart and engaging people including;

• Patrick Dunlop, a Professor at Curtin’s Future of Work Institute, who talked about GPT for coding, recruitment simulations, and research reliability
• Curtin Professor Billy Sung, a professor at Curtin University, who led the audience through prompt engineering, AI-generated stimuli, and commercialisation
• Curtin Professor of internet studies Katie Ellis, who reminded us all how important diversity and access is by talking about inclusive research synthesis using Ellicit, ChatGPT, and Copilot
• Curtin University professor of information systems Nik Thompson, who led the Forum through secure, local AI tools for spreadsheets, chatbots, and data wrangling

The result was a vivid and informative round-up of how AI will work through the lenses of areas from humanities to data science, and the experimental spirit in the room was palpable.
