WADSIH’s Hackathons are the talk of WA data science and AI community, and we recently wrapped the AFAC 2025 Emergency Management Hackathon along with partners, the WA Department of Fire & Emergency Services, where teams of coders and engineers competed for $20,000 worth of prizes and made the event one of our most exciting Hackathons yet.
We kicked things off back in June with our Reverse Pitch event, and the entrants have been busy ever since – building, iterating and preparing to change the way we use data to mobilise and protect the community against fires, floods and other natural disasters.
But now, over three days of the AFAC25 Conference, Australasia’s largest and most comprehensive emergency management conference and exhibition, the 10 finalist teams finessed their applications and proposals for presentation along with the mentors and advisors, and we held the finale event that crowned the winners.
The teams that built the most practical, data-driven solutions that can stand up in the heat of a crisis were;
🏆 Grand Prize: Fit For Fire
🏅 Runner Up: Flood Pipe
👏 Judges’ Commendation: Human Response
💻 Technical Achievement: Aquanauts
The judges were blown away by how innovative and applicable the entries were, and although it’s a cliché, everyone was a winner, including DFES itself and all West Australians who stand to benefit from a better way to handle disaster management and emergency response data.
