This year, we worked hard to promote the uptake of artificial intelligence and data science across Western Australia. Through a range of workshops, industry partnerships, and community events, we equipped businesses and individuals with essential AI and data literacy skills. We supported organizations in adopting AI-driven solutions to boost efficiency and foster innovation. By hosting two major hackathons, training programs, and research collaborations, we helped bridge the gap between academia and industry, encouraging practical applications of AI technologies.
We also championed inclusivity, supporting underrepresented groups in tech to ensure more diverse participation in AI and data science. By demystifying AI and providing accessible resources, we empowered industries to embrace new technologies and contributed to building a dynamic and thriving AI and data science ecosystem in Western Australia.
We celebrate our efforts and achievements with everyone who has supported our events, and we are looking forward to seeing familiar and new faces in the coming year! Check out our year in photos (and videos) below!
At ResBaz 2024, WADSIH continued its mission to promote the uptake of artificial intelligence and data science by empowering researchers with essential skills and knowledge. Through engaging workshops, hands-on demonstrations, and collaborative sessions, we helped participants discover new ways to integrate AI and data-driven solutions into their research. Our team fostered an inclusive environment where researchers of all backgrounds could connect, learn, and innovate. By supporting ResBaz, we aimed to build a vibrant research community ready to tackle future challenges with AI and data science.
This year, Curtin University hosted its inaugural AI in Research Forum, spearheaded by our Director, Alex Jenkins. This landmark event brought researchers from across the university together to explore and share how artificial intelligence is driving advancements in their respective fields.
The forum showcased a wide array of innovative topics, highlighting the diverse ways AI is enhancing research methodologies and outcomes. Researchers engaged in meaningful discussions, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange across disciplines.
Check out the photos below for a glimpse into the inspiring presentations and exciting breakthroughs shared at the event!
We were fortunate to learn from Dr. Stephanie Stoll, an international researcher pushing the boundaries of AI and assistive technologies. Dr. Stoll shared her incredible work in deep learning, illustrating how AI is being harnessed in fields like computer vision and natural language processing to develop life-changing innovations.
One of the most inspiring moments came when she shared how computer vision and natural language processing could be used to produce sign language through written text, making assistive technology more accessible. Additionally, she showcased breakthroughs in cloud-based assistive technologies, which help individuals with disabilities by providing adaptable and user-friendly solutions.
Her presentation highlighted the profound impact of AI on enhancing independence and quality of life for those with disabilities. Dr. Stoll’s work exemplifies how AI can drive inclusivity and create meaningful, everyday improvements for people who rely on assistive technologies.
We were also honoured to host the “Empowering Neurodiverse Talent to Thrive in the Workplace” event with the Idoba. This event highlighted the value neurodiverse individuals bring to tech workforce. After a warm welcome from Madelene Kawitzki and an opening address by Prof. Tele Tan, an inspiring panel discussion featured Jacinta Reynolds (idoba), Emily Kendall (South32), Kristina West (Rio Tinto), and James Lewis (Woodside). They shared personal stories, challenges, and strategies for fostering inclusive work environments. This event reinforced our commitment to creating workplaces where everyone, regardless of neurological differences, can thrive and contribute to innovation.
We were also proud to host the Digital Public Sector Graduate Program Speed Networking in collaboration with the Office of Digital Government in August. The evening was filled with energy and insightful exchanges as graduates connected with digital representatives from various government departments.
Attendees learned about the unique opportunities offered through the graduate program, listened to inspiring graduate journeys, and gained valuable insights into digital careers within the public sector. The event concluded with drinks, canapés, and plenty of networking, making it a fantastic way to support emerging talent in digital innovation. We extend our gratitude to Natasha Williams and the Office of Digital Government for making this event possible.
This year, we also successfully organised not one, but two hackathons this year! We collaborated with the WA Police Force to bring together a hackathon where students, developers and innovators are brought together to tackle real-world public safety challenges using artificial intelligence and data science. Participants worked on solutions to optimize emergency responses, predict vehicle locations, and create virtual assistants for frontline officers. The hackathon buzzed with creativity and collaboration, with The A Team* winning the top prize for their innovative solution. This event highlighted the potential of AI in public safety, and we’re grateful to the WA Police Force for making this possible.
To round off this amazing year, we also organised the WA Health Hackathon in collaboration with the WA Department of Health, HBF Health, North Metropolitan Health Service, WA Life Sciences Hub and Arkahna. This event brought together talented minds to address pressing challenges in healthcare using artificial intelligence and data-driven solutions. Participants tackled issues such as improving patient outcomes, optimizing hospital workflows, and enhancing public health responses. The hackathon fostered a spirit of innovation and teamwork, resulting in creative solutions with real potential to improve healthcare delivery. We’re incredibly proud of the participants’ dedication and we’re grateful to our event partners for making this event come into fruition.
As the year draws to a close, we are proud to reflect on what has been an incredible year for the WA Data Science Innovation Hub (WADSIH). The events and milestones highlighted in this Year in Review underscore our deep commitment to driving innovation and technological advancement across Western Australia.
Our efforts to promote the adoption of artificial intelligence and data science – whether you are a student, educator, business owner, or thought leader – are aimed at strengthening the Western Australian economy and future-proofing our industries.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has contributed to our journey. For those eager to learn more about our work, we invite you to connect with us. Together, let’s continue to empower WA through data-driven innovation.
We would like to acknowledge and pay respect to the traditional owners of the land on which the WADSIH office is located, the Whadjuk people of the Nyungar Nation.
